Chapter 13
Chapter 12 - Building Rapport  Chapter Review  Chapter 14 - Format Matters

After Your Interview

It should be obvious that a big thank you is in order. Since you have most certainly built some rapport, a handshake, a thank you and a big smile is all you need.

It is customary for the interviewer to ask if you have any questions. This is the time to ask some of the questions that are listed in the pre-interview section. You can also ask when you should expect to hear from them on the results of the interviews.

Because you have collected business cards or names from each one of your interviewers, you can send each one of them a hand written note on a simple thank you card that states your appreciation for the time they took to interview you and how much you are looking forward to hearing from them.

Even if you don't really care about the outcome of the interview, send a card anyway. You never know how much of a difference a personal gesture can make in the perception people have of you. DO NOT send e-mail. It isn't personal, takes no effort and only a few seconds to write. It is too impersonal to be meaningful. Send the "thank you", that day, so they get it the next, even if you have to drive across town to a post office where there is a late pick-up time.

It All Depends On You Now

It is doubtful that you will get turned down IF you have done your homework and properly prepared for the interview. You have been given the very best tools available but not every person is going to master every technique or realize the importance of preparation, practice and mastery.

Just like a skilled craftsmen, you will develop your skills over time. You may be a very quick study because of your background or it may take you some time. Just don't stop learning and applying these techniques.

If you do get turned down, use the turndown as an opportunity to get it right next time. Ask if they know anyone who can use your skills. Do not be defeated. Embrace the opportunity to get some useful help and ask for some honest, direct feedback. Use it wisely, be thankful for the lesson and move on.

You may actually be the right person for the job. They could have already had an internal candidate in mind when they advertised the position. Maybe they were told to hire from within or maybe their open requisition just got closed before they could make the offer. It may not be you at all. Move on.

Final Thoughts

If you expect different results from doing the same thing over and over, you are crazy.

If you want what others have, do what they do. By learning and using techniques that really work, in a way that has been proven to succeed, you can expect the same result. GUARANTEED!
